Akniti Welcomes Moodys Recognition of Thailand as a Prepared Emerging Market Country

Akniti expressed satisfaction that Moody's views Thailand as an emerging market country, highlighting it among countries ready to handle global economic shocks, citing its strong policy framework and the Bank of Thailand's reputation for credibility.

On 7 May 2026, Mr. Akniti Nitithanprapas, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, welcomed Moody's Investors Service's latest report which identified Thailand, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Mexico as emerging market countries better prepared than many others to face future global economic shocks.

The report stated that Thailand is included in this group because it has demonstrated ongoing resilience during times of market stress. Moody's noted that Thailand benefits from the following factors.

1) Strong policy framework: Thailand has a clear and predictable monetary policy framework, indicating that the Bank of Thailand is viewed as credible and stable in managing inflation and interest rates.

2) Stable inflation forecasts: This means that businesses and investors generally believe inflation will remain under control, which helps reduce panic when external shocks occur.

3) Flexible exchange rate: The baht can adjust its value as needed, helping to absorb shocks instead of resorting to severe monetary measures.

4) Thailand can manage shocks through price adjustments.

Moody's stated that Thailand's resilient economy typically responds to volatility through market price adjustments, such as currency, bond yields, and stock prices, without losing access to capital markets.

Previously, on 21 April, Moody's upgraded Thailand's credit outlook from "Negative" to "Stable" while maintaining the sovereign credit rating at Baa1. This revision reflects an improved balance of risks to Thailand's economy and increased confidence in the country’s economic policy direction.
