Citizens Storm Parliament Urging Dr. Warong to Abolish Politicians Privileges

Citizens stormed the parliament, demanding the abolition of pensions and immunity privileges, reduction of MPs' and senators' assistants quotas, and increased allowances for the elderly and school lunch meals for children.

On 7 May 2026 at the parliament building, representatives from the People's Protection Group (ศปปส.), led by Mr. Anon Klinkaew, the group's chairman, along with more than 20 supporters, submitted a letter to Dr. Warong Dechkitvikrom, a party-list MP and leader of the Thai Pakdee Party. They called for reforms on the benefits and budgets of members of the House of Representatives and the Senate in three key areas, aiming to protect national interests and establish new transparent political standards.

Mr. Anon explained the reasons for seeking to abolish pensions for current and former parliament members, noting that political positions are not permanent civil service roles with continuous service. Therefore, pensions represent an unfair budget burden on taxpayers. Similarly, he proposed ending immunity privileges to enable the justice system to operate equally and to prevent politicians from using them as a shield in criminal cases such as lèse-majesté (Section 112) or money laundering. He also suggested reducing the number of assistants and experts from eight to three per politician, reallocating the saved funds to more essential missions like increasing elderly allowances or funding school lunch meals, which would benefit society more broadly.

After receiving the letter, Dr. Warong Dechkitvikrom expressed his agreement with the citizens' proposals and his readiness to vigorously push the issue forward, especially concerning pensions, emphasizing that the public should not bear the lifelong financial burden of supporting politicians who are no longer in office. He reaffirmed his stance that politicians are volunteers serving the people's welfare, not individuals seeking to exploit them. He stated that the matter will be brought into parliamentary consideration and proceed through legal and constitutional channels to restore fairness to the national budget system.
