Akkaradej Shakes Up Road Safety Fund, Proposes App for Locals to Report Risky Spots

"Akkaradej" shakes up the Road Safety Fund by proposing an app for residents to report risky spots and damaged roads, along with using KPIs to measure agency performance before approving next year’s budget.

On 7 May 2026 GMT+7, Mr. Akkaradej Wongpitakroj, Member of Parliament for Ratchaburi from the Bhumjaithai Party, debated the 2023 Road Safety Fund report. He voiced concern over the continuing road accident situation that claims lives, especially among youth who are vital national resources. He also questioned the fund’s budget management, noting some projects overlap with the core duties of local agencies such as the Department of Highways, Department of Rural Roads, or the State Railway of Thailand. He argued the fund should not spend on infrastructure like installing warning signals at railway crossings, which these agencies are directly responsible for, but rather on projects that yield concrete results in reducing accidents.

Mr. Akkaradej proposed an innovative idea to involve the public by developing an application for reporting accident-prone locations, road damage, or malfunctioning traffic devices. This would allow information to be sent directly to responsible agencies for timely fixes. Crucially, the data from this app should be used as Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to evaluate each agency’s effectiveness, influencing next year’s budget allocation. Agencies that neglect or delay fixing reported hazards should face budget approval conditions. This information should also be forwarded to the Budget Committee to establish a rigorous oversight system.

Furthermore, the Ratchaburi MP from Bhumjaithai stressed that accident causes must be addressed comprehensively—covering "people, vehicles, and roads." This includes fostering traffic discipline, enforcing public vehicle standards, and managing risk spots consistently reported by citizens. The aim is to ensure the Road Safety Fund’s budget is used most effectively to shift from loss to genuine public safety nationwide. He emphasized that only proactive agencies that demonstrably reduce accidents deserve continuous financial support.
