Prime Minister Meets Counterparts from Three Neighboring Countries to Boost $25 Billion Trade and Foster Southern Border Peace with Power Grid Initiative

Prime Minister Anutin concluded bilateral meetings with three neighboring countries, partnering with Vietnam to boost trade to $25 billion, discussing with Malaysia the continuation of peace efforts in the southern border, and collaborating with Singapore to establish an electricity grid.

On 8 May 2026 in Cebu, Philippines, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul took advantage of the 48th ASEAN Summit to hold bilateral talks with the leaders of Vietnam and Malaysia, aiming to enhance economic relations and regional security. In discussions with Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung, both sides focused on cooperation in three key areas, especially aiming to increase bilateral trade to $25 billion, highlighting ASEAN as a strategic and safe hub for global investment.

Regarding investment, the Prime Minister welcomed VietJet Airlines’ interest in investing in Thailand’s aviation infrastructure, and announced plans to soon sign a comprehensive strategic partnership action plan during the Vietnamese President’s visit to Thailand. Both countries will jointly act as "big brothers" to drive tangible development and connectivity in the subregion.

In talks with Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, emphasis was placed on seamless relations by accelerating construction of the second Golok River Bridge and the Sadet-Bukit Kayu Hitam border road connection, aiming to start construction within this year. The Prime Minister also announced the appointment of a new chief peace negotiation team, reaffirming commitment to resolving southern border issues peacefully, with Malaysia’s full support. He confirmed readiness to make an official visit to Malaysia within 2026 to strengthen leadership trust.

Subsequently, the Prime Minister held bilateral discussions with Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, presenting the concept “Synergise Our Strength” to unite efforts for mutual strengthening rather than viewing ASEAN members as competitors. The focus is to use ASEAN as a key production base in the global supply chain to boost international influence. Singapore agreed and pledged full support to Thailand across all dimensions. Additionally, both parties reaffirmed their joint commitment to advance the ASEAN Power Grid to ensure sustainable, long-term regional energy security and connectivity.
