The Ministry of Interior is taking a tough stance to deal with tourists exhibiting bad behavior, both Thai and foreign, ordering strict nationwide enforcement of laws without regard for status or connections, and declaring no cases will be informally negotiated or cleared.
On 8 May 2026, Atthasit Sampanrat, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, revealed that Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul has urgently instructed provincial governors and provincial police commanders nationwide to intensify law enforcement after discovering cases of foreign tourists behaving inappropriately, causing distress and damaging the tourism image.
Atthasit emphasized that everyone must abide by Thai law, especially foreigners who must not exert influence, break laws, or bully locals under any circumstances. He stressed, “No one is above the law, and no cases will be negotiated.” He ordered decisive action. Investigations found Israeli groups in Surat Thani province on Koh Phangan, Koh Samui, and Koh Tao using tourist visas to covertly work and run nominee businesses. Phuket enforces a “Zero Tolerance” policy with no leniency; serious offenses will lead to revocation of residency rights and immediate deportation. Cases of unlicensed driving will be prosecuted in court without exception.
The Ministry of Interior aims for Thailand to be a safe and open tourist destination but stresses that all visitors must respect the law, culture, and the rights of others in order to maintain peace and order.
