Anutin Welcomes Successful ASEAN Summit Ratchada Affirms Cambodia Talks Exclude Border Demarcation

The Prime Minister held talks with the President of the Philippines, welcoming the successful ASEAN summit and jointly promoting ASEAN’s role. Ratchada summarized the three-day discussions, affirming that talks with Cambodia adhered to peaceful principles and national interests, with no negotiations on border demarcation.


On 9 May 2026 at 09:00 local time in the Philippines (one hour ahead of Thailand), at the Business Center of Shangri-La Mactan Hotel in Cebu City, Republic of the Philippines, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul held bilateral talks with H.E. Mr. Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr., President of the Republic of the Philippines, on the occasion of attending the 48th ASEAN Summit.


The Prime Minister expressed gratitude to the Philippines for excellently hosting the meeting, noting it proceeded smoothly with concrete outcomes. The discussions reflected all parties’ commitment to seeking cooperative approaches leading to shared success. He also praised the Philippines’ role in initiating trilateral meetings, providing opportunities for frank and constructive dialogue that led to mutual understanding on key issues. The Philippine side played a crucial role in fostering an atmosphere of cooperation and trust.


The outcome of these talks was satisfactory and represented an important step in enhancing stability, peace, and constructive cooperation in the region. All parties welcomed the collective effort to achieve positive, tangible results going forward.


On this occasion, both sides also discussed cooperation in various areas including food security, trade, investment, and energy to strengthen regional stability and security.



Talks with Cambodia did not include any negotiations on border demarcation.


Later, Ms. Ratchada Thanadirek, spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, disclosed the results of the Prime Minister’s participation in the 48th ASEAN Summit held in Cebu City, Republic of the Philippines, from 7–9 May 2026. The Prime Minister used the ASEAN platform to affirm Thailand’s stance on promoting peace, resolving issues through dialogue, adherence to international rules, and pushing ASEAN to be more unified, strong, and influential globally while safeguarding the highest interests of the nation and Thai people.


On the first day, the Prime Minister held trilateral talks with Samdech Maha Baworthbodhi Hun Manet, Prime Minister of Cambodia, and Ferdinand Marcos Jr., President of the Philippines, to discuss the Thailand-Cambodia situation.


The Thai side participated constructively and forward-looking, bringing foreign affairs and security delegations to reaffirm Thailand’s commitment to a peaceful approach while safeguarding sovereignty and the highest interests of the Thai people. The Prime Minister stressed that Thailand and Cambodia are neighboring countries closely connected in many dimensions, and conflicts cause losses to all sides. It is time for both countries to open a new chapter of relations based on sincerity, trust, and constructive cooperation.


In the talks, Thailand and Cambodia agreed to entrust their foreign ministers to jointly develop practical confidence-building measures, starting with issues that can be immediately addressed to restore trust and strengthen bilateral relations.


However, these talks did not involve any negotiations regarding border demarcation or border openings. The Thai side remains committed to protecting national interests and strictly operating within legal frameworks and international rules.


At the meeting on 8 May 2026, the Prime Minister proposed advancing the ASEAN Power Grid, utilizing the ASEAN Petroleum Security Mechanism, and promoting renewable energy investment to ensure long-term regional energy stability. The meeting also approved the “Cebu Protocol” to amend the ASEAN Charter to accommodate Timor-Leste’s membership and jointly endorsed four important declarations covering maritime cooperation, responses to Middle East impacts, disaster management, and youth empowerment on climate change.


The Prime Minister also held talks with Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung, where both sides agreed to expedite expanding bilateral trade to reach the target of 25 billion U.S. dollars. Discussions with Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong emphasized that ASEAN member states should leverage their collective strengths to enhance regional influence globally and supported cooperation in energy, especially advancing the ASEAN power grid to bolster long-term energy security.


Talks with Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim resulted in agreements to accelerate cross-border infrastructure projects, including the Sadao–Bukit Kayu Hitam road and the second Golok River bridge, to promote trade, travel, and border economy. They also discussed cooperation to build peace in the southern border provinces through peaceful methods.


On 9 May 2026, before returning, the Prime Minister met again with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., reaffirming Thailand’s readiness to support the Philippines’ ASEAN chairmanship. They agreed to strengthen cooperation in food security, trade, investment, and energy to enhance regional stability and security. Both sides also agreed to elevate collaboration in combating transnational crime, particularly online fraud.


Most recently, the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, along with his delegation, departed from Brigadier General Benito N. Ebuen Air Base (BGBNEAB) in Cebu City, Republic of the Philippines, and is scheduled to arrive at Military Airport 2, Wing 6 (Don Mueang District, Bangkok) at 14:10.
