Thai and Cambodian Prime Ministers Uphold Joint Ceasefire Statement, No Talks on Border Demarcation or Checkpoint Opening

Anutin revealed after attending the ASEAN summit that there are only opportunities and that Thailand has gained confidence from member states. He declared Thailand is ready to support ASEAN food security and confirmed that Thailand and Cambodia adhere to the joint ceasefire statement, with no talks about border demarcation or opening border checkpoints.

On 9 May 2026, Anutin Charnvirakul, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, gave an interview after returning from the 48th ASEAN Summit in the Philippines. He said Thailand reaffirmed its commitment to resolving conflicts and building peace based on international rules and national interests. Thailand proposed proactive cooperation with member states amid global uncertainties, focusing on strengthening ASEAN's unity, role, and influence internationally. At the meeting, food security was discussed more than oil and energy. Thailand assured ASEAN countries that, as a major global food producer, it is ready to support regional food security. Regardless of global war or energy issues, Thailand is prepared to be a food support base for ASEAN members. He emphasized that oil cannot be eaten; in a crisis, if one must choose between oil and food, Thailand’s food security is stronger. Oil can be bought with money, but without food strength, other hardships arise. He observed agreement and readiness among nearly all member countries to seek mutual support.

However, Thailand did not lose anything from this meeting; rather, it gained opportunities and increased confidence from member states. He believes these factors will enhance trade, investment, and the strengthening of the ASEAN region.

Anutin spoke about his meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet. He said Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr., President of the Philippines and ASEAN chair, wanted to create a positive atmosphere at the ASEAN meeting and arranged a meeting between Thailand and Cambodia. Regarding the details of the talks, the public has been informed through his statements. He confirmed that everything remains in accordance with the 2025 Joint Statement on the ceasefire. There were no discussions on border demarcation or opening border checkpoints; the framework of the Joint Boundary Committee (JBC) and the General Border Committee (GBC) as joint committees remains in place. Marcos acknowledged that communication continues to maintain a good atmosphere at the meeting. Additionally, during this trip, Anutin met with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) chairman, who expressed confidence in Thailand and arranged a future visit to Thailand. Anutin invited him to meet at Government House to discuss support for various Thai projects.
