Attention focuses on the Cabinet meeting tomorrow (12 May) to discuss an urgent agenda: the broadcast rights deal for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, aiming to allow Thai people to watch live for free.
On 11 May 2026, a source from the Government House revealed that at tomorrow's Cabinet meeting (12 May 2026), the government will discuss an important agenda concerning the live broadcast of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Cabinet discussion must address acquiring the broadcasting rights from FIFA to meet tight deadlines. This is urgent because the World Cup is scheduled from 11 June to 19 July 2026, hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
. The Cabinet is discussing this because the government’s main policy is to promote free public access to world-class football matches, aiming to bring happiness and inspire youth to play sports, which benefits the physical and mental health of the nation. Previously, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul said the government is trying its best regarding the World Cup broadcast. Although it cannot buy the rights directly, it will coordinate cooperation with the private sector.
However, last week, the Prime Minister met with the chairman of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) and disclosed that they discussed World Cup live broadcasts. More clarity is expected after tomorrow’s Cabinet meeting.
