Order to X-ray Parliament, Set to Transform Sala Kaew - R.7 Lawn into New Green Lung in Bangkoks Heart

Sophon has ordered a thorough examination of Parliament to prepare for transforming 'Sala Kaew - R.7 Lawn' into a new green lung in the heart of Bangkok, connecting to the BTS, aiming to boost tourism and provide a space for exercise.

11 May 2026 GMT+7 Mr. Sophon Sarum, President of Parliament, together with executives from the Secretariat of the House of Representatives and the working team, conducted a survey of the area around the King Prajadhipok (Rama VII) Monument Lawn and Sala Kaew. They discussed ways to improve the landscape and maximize the use of the area, with information provided by Mr. Ase Sukyang, President of the Association of Siamese Architects under Royal Patronage; Mr. Preeda Hutajutha, President of the Thai Urban Planners Association; and Mr. Pichet Kunathamrak, Director-General of the Department of Rail Transport, regarding the renovation plans for Sala Kaew and the surrounding landscape.

The President of Parliament stated that the key idea behind the renovation is to make Sala Kaew functional and suitable for Thailand's climate while preserving the original designer's aesthetic. The surrounding area must blend harmoniously with existing buildings and architecture and accommodate the planned underground MRT station in front of Parliament.

"We must utilize the Parliament area effectively to justify the investment, thoroughly examining the space to ensure public accessibility and optimal use. My duty is to perfect the area so it benefits both the public and parliament members. It should become another green lung of Bangkok, serve as a place for exercise, and promote tourism. Importantly, we must consider how to achieve this quickly."
