Anutin denies the authenticity of the border opening audio clip, confirming it is definitely AI-generated after Cambodian influencers circulated it. He dismisses Cambodia's refusal to engage in bilateral talks and reiterates Thailand's approach to cancel MOU44 and use UNCLOS mechanisms. Regarding border fence construction, he confirms the military has been allocated a budget to proceed.
On 13 May 2026, Anutin Charnvirakul, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, addressed the case of a Cambodian influencer spreading an audio clip on social media suggesting the Thai Prime Minister would open the border checkpoint. He said, “That is clearly AI. I don't speak like that. Please don't believe it.” He questioned why such questionable methods are increasing daily, emphasizing the clip is unreliable and he never said such things, affirming there will be no border opening.
Yesterday (12 May), Hun Sen, President of the Cambodian Senate, ordered a ban on bilateral negotiations after Thailand cancelled MOU44. Anutin said Thailand unilaterally cancelled MOU44 without needing approval or to report to anyone. When he attended the ASEAN meeting in Cebu, Philippines, he met with the Cambodian Prime Minister and informed him, who acknowledged and expressed disappointment. That was Cambodia’s stance. At the meeting, Cambodia’s Prime Minister also raised this issue in his statement, affirming they would use compulsory conciliation to resolve disputes before other processes. This shows Cambodia’s position. Thailand's stance is to follow UNCLOS procedures and no negotiation format has been set because Thailand is not troubled by the issue.
Anutin also updated on assistance for Thai citizens detained by Cambodian soldiers after gathering forest products near the Thailand-Cambodia border, with their court hearing expected today. He said coordination has occurred; in the past, some Cambodians unintentionally crossed borders via natural routes, including fishermen. Coordination takes place, and if it appears they did not enter to commit theft or threaten Thailand’s security, they are sent back. He hopes if our people have not broken Cambodian laws, communication continues. As stated, this concerns government-to-government disagreement, not the public.
Regarding progress on building a fence along the Thailand-Cambodia border following arrests of Thais, the Prime Minister said the border wall is a military matter with budget already allocated and approved by the government. Construction steps and designs should be directed to the military. Security units responsible vary by area: some are under the army, navy, or the Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters.
