Election for Bangkok Governor 2026: Election Commission Explains Replacement Procedures if Governor Resigns Before Term Ends

Bangkok Governor Election 2026: The Election Commission explains that if the Governor of Bangkok resigns before completing the term, the Permanent Secretary of Bangkok will act in their place. If the term ends naturally, the governor remains in office until the new governor assumes duties.

On 14 May 2026, the Election Commission Office released a document clarifying the status of the Bangkok governor's position when the term expires or the office is vacated for other reasons. It stated that according to Section 54 of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration Act of 1985 and its amendments, in the event the Governor of Bangkok leaves office at the end of the term, that governor shall remain in office until the newly elected governor assumes the position.

However, if the Governor of Bangkok leaves office for reasons other than the natural end of the term, such as resignation, the Permanent Secretary of Bangkok will act on behalf of the governor until a new governor takes office.

Furthermore, the tenure of the Governor of Bangkok differs from other local administrative organizations such as Provincial Administrative Organizations (PAOs), municipalities, or Subdistrict Administrative Organizations (SAOs), where the Permanent Secretary acts as interim leader when the local executive leaves office or the position becomes vacant.

Additional reports indicate that the Governor of Bangkok and the Bangkok Metropolitan Council members will complete their terms on 21 May 2026, with the Election Commission scheduling the election for Sunday, 28 June 2026.
