Chadchart Sittipunt revealed he will resign before the term ends on 21 May, affirming he will run for a second term as Bangkok governor. He will not nominate candidates for the Bangkok Metropolitan Council under his own name but is prepared to work with all independent council members.
On 15 May 2026, Chadchart Sittipunt, Governor of Bangkok, told Thairath that he will resign before his term ends on 21 May because he is scheduled to travel to the United States to attend his son Saenpiti Sittipunt's graduation on 22 May. Asked if avoiding acting governor status was part of the reason, Chadchart said that was part of it, as acting governor status would be unfair. Moreover, if he attends his son's graduation, he should not use official working hours. These factors influenced his decision to resign early.
"I have a specific reason: my son is graduating, and it happens to be on the 22nd. I must be there before then, so I cannot stay through the 21st. To be honest, the resignation is likely to happen close to the 21st. I want to be there to receive Saendee's diploma on time. Please wait and see," Chadchart said.
Chadchart also stated he is certain to run for a second term as Bangkok governor, confirming he will remain unaffiliated with any political party. Regarding Bangkok Metropolitan Council candidates, he will not nominate any under his name but is open to working with all independent council members.
Meanwhile, reporters checked with the Ministry of Interior and found that no resignation letter has been submitted from Chadchart yet.
