Looking back at the history of the prominent Thonburi family, the "Muangsiri" clan is fielding candidates to compete for Bangkok Metropolitan Council seats, hoping to maintain their championship in Bang Khun Thian and Bang Bon districts.
On 15 May 2026, reporters noted that when mentioning political families who have controlled the electoral grounds for Bangkok Metropolitan Council (BMC) members on the Thonburi side for many terms, one such family is the "Muangsiri" family. This family is one of the oldest and most influential political clans in Bangkok, especially in the Bang Khun Thian and Bang Bon districts, often referred to as the "prominent Thonburi household."
The family's path has involved passing down their voter base across generations with notable political adaptability. Key figures in the "Muangsiri" family have firmly established themselves in both national and local (Bangkok) politics, starting with
• the pioneering generation, Kamnan Pliew, or Mr. Pliew Muangsiri, former Member of Parliament (MP) for Bangkok in 1979, who laid the groundwork for local popularity before passing the baton to Mr. Prasert Muangsiri and Mr. Suwat Muangsiri, who consecutively served as MPs for Bangkok.
• Subsequently, the "Muangsiri" heirs progressed steadily in both national and local politics, with up to five family members serving as MPs for Bangkok since Mr. Pliew, including Mr. Prasert Muangsiri, Mr. Suwat Muangsiri, Mr. Sakon Muangsiri, and Police Colonel Dr. Samart Muangsiri. They have been involved with multiple political parties, including Prachakorn Thai, Thai Rak Thai, Palang Pracharath, Democrat, and Pheu Thai.
Alongside local politics,
in 1990, Mr. Surachai Muangsiri became BMC member for Bang Khun Thian district, his first term under the Prachakorn Thai party, and was subsequently elected to the Bangkok Metropolitan Council for three terms, including
1. BMC member for Bang Khun Thian in 1990 with Prachakorn Thai party,
2. BMC member for Bang Khun Thian in 1994 with Prachakorn Thai party,
3. BMC member for Bang Bon in 1998 with the Democrat party (he was the first BMC member for Bang Bon after it was separated from Bang Khun Thian in 1997).
He held a local political stronghold,
before in 2002, Mr. Praphan Muangsiri, father of Mr. Narongsak Muangsiri, entered local politics and was elected BMC member for Bang Bon district for the first time under the Thai Rak Thai party. He was elected to the Bangkok Metropolitan Council for two terms, including
1. BMC member in 2002 with Thai Rak Thai party,
2. BMC member in 2006 with Thai Rak Thai party.
In 2006, Mr. Sathorn Muangsiri was elected BMC member for Bang Khun Thian district, serving his first term with the Democrat party and was elected for two terms, including
1. BMC member in 2006 with Democrat party,
2. BMC member in 2010 with Democrat party.
Securing two constituencies,
In 2010, Mr. Sarach Muangsiri, son of Mr. Prasert Muangsiri and sibling to former MPs Mr. Sakon and Police Colonel Dr. Samart Muangsiri, was elected BMC member for Bang Khun Thian for the first term in 2010 and the second term in 2022. Meanwhile, Mr. Narongsak Muangsiri (Bird), son of Mr. Praphan Muangsiri, was also elected BMC member for Bang Bon twice in the same period, under the Democrat party. In 2025, the "Muangsiri" family announced their move to the Pheu Thai party.
In this upcoming BMC election, members of the "Muangsiri" family will compete for seats in two districts:
◦ 1. Bang Khun Thian district: Mr. Sarach Muangsiri, two-term incumbent BMC member for Bang Khun Thian, and
◦ 2. Bang Bon district: Mr. Narongsak Muangsiri, two-term incumbent BMC member for Bang Bon, seeking to defend his seat.
Both Mr. Sarach and Mr. Narongsak have declared their candidacies aiming for a third term on the council; notably, they are running as independent candidates under the group called "Working People." They explained this choice as a desire for independence and freedom from party political influence in their local work.
