The Consumer Protection Committee has proposed increasing lottery prize amounts, raising the first prize to 10 million baht and the prize for the last two digits to 5,000 baht. They plan to summon the Director of the Government Lottery Office to provide information on feasibility, affirming that this will not mislead the public and explaining it as a measure to help resolve underground lottery problems.
On 15 May 2026 at the Parliament, Mr. Boonruwee Yomjinda, a party-list MP from the Ruamjai Thai Party and the 4th Vice Chairman of the Consumer Protection Committee of the House of Representatives, said in an interview after the first committee meeting that their work will focus on resolving complaints that cause public distress. He personally will push to increase government lottery prizes and plans to present this proposal at the committee meeting on 21 May. The idea is to raise the prize for the last two digits from 2,000 baht to 5,000 baht, the last three digits prize from 4,000 baht to 10,000 baht, and the first prize from 6 million baht to 10 million baht. This falls within the committee’s scope as it addresses consumer complaints. He emphasized that lottery prizes have not increased for 10 years, while the Government Lottery Office earns huge annual profits, so reviewing prize amounts is necessary to ensure fairness to consumers.
Mr. Boonruwee stated that if the committee agrees, they will fully push forward with this issue. They will summon the Director of the Government Lottery Office to provide data on annual revenue and profits to find ways to allocate more benefits to the public. Some of the profits could be used to enhance social welfare, such as increasing scholarships for underprivileged students and raising school lunch budgets, which currently stand at only 20 baht per student. Since these profits are considered "sin taxes," it is necessary to ensure fairness for the public. The Government Lottery Office should not exploit the people. Prize amounts have not been raised for many years, and this proposal is expected to please the public, as many Thais participate in gambling. He affirmed that increasing prize money will not mislead the public, as this is a commercial matter and will also help address the underground lottery problem.
