Transport Ministry Explains Container Train Collision with BMTA Bus, Unable to Lower Barrier, Urges Injury Check

Siripong explained the alarming incident in which a BMTA bus was struck by a container freight train. The bus was stopped blocking the crossing barrier, which could not be lowered. Authorities are urgently checking the number of injured.

On 16 May 2026, Mr. Siripong Angkasakulkit, Deputy Minister of Transport, revealed details about the severe accident involving a bus colliding with a train. Initially, he reported that the bus had stopped at a red traffic light, partially parked and stuck on the railway tracks before the accident occurred.

Because the bus was blocking the tracks, the automatic railway crossing system could not lower the barriers as usual. Meanwhile, the train involved was a fully loaded container freight train, making it quite heavy. When the train operator saw the bus blocking the tracks at close range, he was unable to brake in time to stop, causing a heavy collision with the bus that led to the accident.

Additional reports indicate the bus involved belongs to the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA). The exact number of passengers aboard, as well as the counts of injured or fatalities, are still being carefully verified by local officials. The Ministry of Transport has instructed relevant agencies to urgently assist those affected and clear the area promptly.
