Nikon Denounces Train-Bus Collision, Urges Government to Improve Safety

Nikon Jamnong expressed sorrow over the train-bus collision, stating it is unacceptable because such incidents rarely occur in the capital area. He urged the government to find ways to improve the safety system.

On 16 May 2026, Nikon Jamnong, chairman of the People Safety Foundation and advisor to the Transport Commission, commented on the incident where a freight train collided with a bus and other vehicles, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries. He expressed deep condolences over the event, calling it unacceptable since such accidents are rare in major cities and create an unsafe environment that is difficult for the public to tolerate.

Nikon said that, with over 23 years of experience in road safety, this incident is a highly negative outlier and should not have occurred. As chairman of the subcommittee studying road and transport safety within the 25th House of Representatives Transport Commission, he noted that similar past accidents are few. He observed that this mass accident might be due to poor coordination of barriers and signals. The freight train involved does not stop at crossings, and such an accident in the capital means commuters will no longer feel safe crossing railway tracks. He said this is unacceptable. Therefore, beyond fully compensating the victims, the government must urgently improve the safety system. Given that there are many railway crossings in Bangkok, if conditions remain, it will certainly cause difficulties for the public and responsible government agencies. He has already communicated his views to the responsible minister and reported them to the commission chairman. Nikon plans to bring these findings and research data to the Transport Commission meeting scheduled urgently for Wednesday, 20 May.
