Chadchart expressed regret once again over the train-bus collision, emphasized the urgent need to fix railway crossings, plans to fly to attend Saendee's graduation, announced his resignation as Bangkok Governor on 18 May at 5 PM, and confirmed he will run for a second term as an independent.
On 17 May 2026, reporters reported that Chadchart Sittipunt, Governor of Bangkok, went live on Facebook this morning while preparing to run and inspect the City Run event at Lan Khon Mueang, Bangkok City Hall (Giant Swing) in Phra Nakhon district, saying "I want to express my condolences regarding yesterday's incident where a train collided with a bus, resulting in 8 deaths and about 33 injuries. This is a tragic event for everyone involved and should not have happened. Going forward, we must strive to find a solution."
"Regarding the situation I inspected this morning, everything is clear. The vehicles have been removed and traffic conditions cleared. Next, we need to investigate what caused the mistake. The railway crossings remain problematic. In Vibhavadi Rangsit, all railway crossings have been elevated, reducing crossings in areas like Chaeng Watthana and Ngam Wong Wan. However, on the route from Chachoengsao province to Yommarat, there are still about 18 railway-road crossings. Although some have barriers, stricter measures are needed. I offer my condolences to everyone affected."
Chadchart continued that today's scheduled city inspection run, which was planned in advance and had many participants, was not canceled. He considered it his final run as Bangkok Governor for this term. Regarding the confusion about his resignation, he clarified that he will resign on 18 May at 5 PM.
, Explaining his reason for resigning, Chadchart said he needs to travel abroad because his son, Saenpiti Sittipunt, also known as Saendee, will graduate for the last time, and he wants to attend and congratulate him later this week. His term officially ends on 21 May, but if he travels without resigning first, an acting governor must be appointed, which could cause complications. Therefore, he decided to resign and clearly announce his candidacy for a second term as Bangkok Governor as an independent, with no political party affiliations. He affirmed he will continue working for everyone as before.
Regarding rumors that his resignation might cause the Bangkok Governor and Council elections to be held on different days, increasing costs, he said the election day will remain the same (28 June 2026) because the term ends only three days apart, so no additional budget is needed. He urged people not to believe incorrect reports, affirming the election date will be as scheduled by officials.
Reporters added that today's city inspection run included several deputy governors of Bangkok, such as Wisanu Sapsompol and Sanon Wangsangboon. Associate Professor Dr. Tawida Kamolwetch (Professor Kaew) could not join as she was on standby at the accident site until late last night.
