Chadchart Assures No Impact in Bangkok After Myanmar Earthquake, Urges Calm

Chadchart urged the public not to panic after the earthquake in Myanmar, revealing that Bangkok’s sensors detected only low-level building tremors, felt slightly but causing no impact or danger.

At 12:30 PM on 18 May 2026 at Bangkok City Hall, Sao Chingcha, Governor Chadchart Sitthiphan, accompanied by Deputy Governors Wisanu Subsompon and Associate Professor Tawida Kamolwetch, addressed the earthquake from Myanmar earlier that morning. They stated that the Earthquake Monitoring Division of the Meteorological Department reported tremors reaching Bangkok. It was confirmed that an earthquake occurred in Mae Sot District, Tak Province, which was felt in some parts of Bangkok but with no reported damage.

Deputy Governor Wisanu said that sensors installed in nine tall Bangkok buildings—including Thaninoparat Building, Klang Hospital, Anusorn 100 Year Building, four buildings at Vajira Hospital, Taksin Hospital, Somdej Phrajao Taksin Maharaj Building, Rama 9 School, and Wat Suttharam School—recorded tremor values of 2 to 4 milli-g. These levels are harmless, as effects only begin at 25 milli-g or higher. Bangkok continuously monitors such events and will promptly inform the public if anything unusual occurs. Last year’s earthquake recorded a sensor reading of 123 milli-g. He urged residents not to panic, and no incidents have been reported through the Traffic Fondue platform. Associate Professor Tawida added that no hospitals under Bangkok’s administration suffered damage or required evacuation.
