Government Pushes to Unlock Social Security for Riders, Sets One-Year Deadline to Upgrade Platform Workers Welfare

The government is advancing efforts to unlock access for rider groups to social security within one year, aiming to elevate platform workers' welfare equally. It has invited rider representatives and civil society to join a working group to hear their feedback.

On 22 May 2026, Second Lieutenant Phatdarasmi Thongsaluyakorn, Deputy Spokesperson of the Prime Minister's Office, stated that the government has acknowledged the demands of the Platform Workers Federation and recognizes the hardships of food and parcel delivery riders. These riders face daily risks on the road but lack legal labor protection and basic welfare equally, due to legal obstacles. As a result, many riders are classified as independent contractors, lacking labor law protection and unable to access benefits when injured or ill from work.

The Ministry of Labor has established a special task force to address this issue, including rider and civil society representatives to genuinely capture workers' voices. The task force will urgently review how different types of platform workers can enter the social security system. For groups unable to join, legal amendments will be made to unlock social security rights for those workers.

The Deputy Spokesperson of the Prime Minister's Office confirmed the government will vigorously drive this policy, aiming for clear results within one year from now. The goal is to improve workers' quality of life and sustainably advance the country's digital economy.
