Government Cracks Down on Illegal Loan Apps with Excessive Interest Rates, Warns Public Against Deceptive Offers

The government is moving forward to crack down on over 1,500 illegal loan apps charging excessive interest rates, warning the public not to be deceived by claims such as “easy loans, fast approval, low interest, few documents, no collateral needed, even blacklisted borrowers can get loans.”

24 May 2026 GMT+7 Ms. Ploytale Laksee Sangchan, Deputy Spokesperson of the Prime Minister’s Office, revealed that the government has directed relevant agencies to integrate efforts and proceed with suppression of illegal loan application platforms, and websites or URLs that charge interest rates exceeding the legal limit continuously.

Ms. Ploytale stated that over the past year (from February 2025 to 20 May 2026), the Bank of Thailand submitted a list of apps to the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DE) to file court requests for blocking 79 applications. The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society and the Fiscal Policy Office found that 57 of these apps were unregistered. The Ministry then filed petitions for court orders to suspend their distribution on app stores and removed these from microloan listings. Additionally, proactive measures blocked 1,466 URLs related to illegal interest charges (from 1 October 2025 to 17 May 2026).

“Currently, scammers are deceiving the public into borrowing money through various methods, often using websites or social media with enticing messages like ‘easy loans, fast approval, low interest, few documents, no collateral required, even blacklisted borrowers can get loans.’ Believing these claims may lead to loss of personal information such as ID card numbers, house registration copies, or bank account details, or loss of assets through demands for fees, deposits, or guarantees. The government strongly warns the public to verify loan app names registered properly on the Bank of Thailand’s website by searching ‘check loan app’ before using services. If anyone has been scammed into paying deposits or fees, they can immediately report and freeze accounts via AOC 1441, available 24 hours.”
