Parliament Speaker Visits Underprivileged Children in Ku Mueang Village to Support Education and Youth Drug Rehabilitation

The Parliament Speaker visited underprivileged children in Ku Mueang Village to promote education and youth rehabilitation away from drug use, assigning the Ku Mueang Subdistrict Administrative Organization chief and local village headmen to closely monitor and prevent any household members from returning to drug involvement.

On 24 May 2026, Mr. Sophon Sarum, Speaker of the Parliament and the House of Representatives, visited and encouraged families affected by drug addiction participating in the “Uniting Faith and Power to Solve Drug Problems Integratively” project in Nong Khamar Subdistrict, Ku Mueang District, Buriram Province.

Mr. Sophon inquired about the families' living conditions after joining the project, particularly regarding housing problems, which remain unsuitable for living. It was found that four people live in the house, lacking all basic utilities for consumption and daily use. Expressing deep concern, he urged relevant agencies to urgently provide assistance. He also assigned the Anantapol Sarum Foundation (Luk Teng) to improve the housing to be more adequate than its current state. Additionally, he instructed the Ku Mueang Subdistrict Administrative Organization chief and local village headmen to closely monitor the children's education and ensure no household members relapse into drug involvement.

Ms. Piyanat Sngiamsak, Director of the Buriram Provincial Social Development and Human Security Office, explained the office's role in caring for children affected by family members' drug use. In this case, a 22-year-old mother and her 2 years and 7 months old child, where the mother is undergoing treatment for substance abuse. After assessing the mother's caregiving capacity, the office found she could not care for the child, so the child was placed under care at the Buriram Children and Family Home. The office focuses on physical, psychological, and developmental rehabilitation. The child shows delayed development and has underlying health issues, requiring close monitoring and prompt treatment. This reflects unsuitable caregiving and unsafe living conditions. Therefore, the office will continue care until it is confident the mother is free from drugs and has stable income to support the child before returning custody to her.
