“Wannar” consulted with the Malaysian ambassador, revealing plans to revive peace talks by late June after a two-year pause, emphasizing the Prime Minister's wish for peace to be realized during this government’s term. He also hinted that Malaysia’s Minister of Agriculture is preparing to fly in for cooperation talks before bringing private sector representatives to negotiate trade deals.
At 3:30 p.m. on 25 May 2026 at the Government House, Mr. Wan Muhammadnor Mata, Prime Minister’s Advisory Chairman, disclosed the outcome of his discussion with Datuk Wan Saidi Wan Abdullah, Malaysian Ambassador to Thailand, and his delegation, who visited to congratulate each other following their recent appointments. They discussed the good relations between the two countries, noting that Malaysian tourists now top the list of visitors to Thailand, surpassing those from China.
Mr. Wan Muhammadnor Mata said that, as an advisor to the Prime Minister responsible for the development of the southern border provinces, he believes the strong relationship between the two countries will greatly support development in all areas. This includes the peace talks in the southern border provinces, with Malaysia acting as facilitator between the government and separatist groups. With cooperation, the talks should advance understanding and help build peace.
Mr. Wan Muhammadnor also spoke about progress in the peace talks, saying clarity is expected after a two-year suspension. The talks will be held during this government’s term, anticipated in June. Technical preparations have begun and will continue into early June, leading to formal dialogue sessions headed by Mr. Thanat Suwannano, Director of the National Intelligence Agency, as chief negotiator for peace in the southern border provinces. These sessions are expected to take place in Malaysia in late June.
When asked about Malaysia’s stance toward the new chief negotiator, Mr. Wan Muhammadnor said the Malaysian ambassador views the new chief as likely to bring progress to the talks. This is Malaysia’s perspective, as Mr. Thanat is believed to have had prior interactions with Malaysian officials.
Asked about Malaysia’s view of this government, Mr. Wan Muhammadnor said the new negotiation team will continue from the previous one, despite personnel changes on both sides. Given the circumstances, progress is expected. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who is also Minister of Interior, wants the talks to conclude and peace to be achieved during this government’s term. The conflict has lasted nearly 20 years, causing many deaths and significant loss of resources, and all parties desire peace.
Mr. Wan Muhammadnor also revealed cooperation between the two countries, saying Malaysia’s Minister of Agriculture will visit him personally to discuss joint agricultural development. Malaysia views Thailand as advanced in fruits, vegetables, fertilizers, beef, and chicken, while Malaysia represents a major market for Thailand. Subsequently, businesspeople from the food and agriculture sectors and relevant ministers will meet to discuss further opportunities.
