Wasawat Presses Foreign Ministry to Clarify MOU 44, Emphasizes No Rush in Diplomacy with Cambodia

Wasawat, serving as chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee, pressed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to clarify the issues surrounding MOU 44, stressing that diplomacy with Cambodia does not need to be rushed. He also warned the government to listen to and heal the emotional wounds of border residents.

On 27 May 2026, Wasawat Puangpornsri, Deputy Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives, acting as chair, revealed after a meeting with representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Department of Treaties and Legal Affairs, and the Border Affairs Division, that they reviewed and heard explanations on the pressing issue regarding the cancellation approach of MOU 44 and the direction of Thailand–Cambodia relations through bilateral negotiation mechanisms.

Wasawat stated that the committee received information, legal details, and impacts in all dimensions. They offered key observations to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasizing that the government must prioritize the feelings and mental well-being of people living in border areas, since local residents still bear wounds and pain from past tensions along the border.

"Foreign policy must balance diplomatic principles with the feelings of the people, especially those in border areas who are directly affected in terms of safety, lifestyle, and trust in the Thai state. Diplomacy with Cambodia does not need to be rushed. Any talks or negotiations should be based on sincerity and clear mutual respect, not just words but demonstrated through actions," Wasawat said.

Additionally, the Foreign Affairs Committee proposed that all related agencies urgently improve the communication of factual information about MOU 44 to the public in a straightforward manner, and genuinely open space to listen to opinions from citizens in border areas. This will help ensure that Thailand's foreign policy stance reflects the highest interests and true sentiments of its people.
