Parliament Speaker Plans to Include Constitutional Amendment on July 7-8 Agenda, Views Blue Regime Rhetoric as No Obstacle

The Parliament Speaker plans to include the constitutional amendment on the agenda for July 7-8. If the committee discusses without delay, all steps will proceed quickly. He views the 'Blue Regime' rhetoric as not an obstacle, acknowledging that occasional conflicts occur in a democratic system but emphasizing respect for the public referendum results.

At 10:51 a.m. on 30 May 2026 at the Parliament, Mr. Sophon Sarum, Speaker of the House of Representatives, spoke about the progress of the constitutional amendment bill and when it would be brought to the House meeting. He said he has received drafts from several parties and has included them all on the agenda. After discussions with the three-party whip council, it is expected to be placed on the agenda for the 7-8 July meeting for a joint parliamentary session to consider the principle in the first reading.

When asked whether the steps after the first reading would take a long time, Mr. Sophon said the constitution is an important law that normally requires a considerable amount of time. He hopes the committee will deliberate without delay because there are many constitutional procedures left, as many parties are watching to see if a new constitution will emerge. If the committee can review it quickly, all processes will proceed rapidly.

When asked about the atmosphere and conflicts between MPs and Senators concerning accusations related to the 'Blue Regime,' Mr. Sophon said it depends on the discussions. He believes the public voted in the referendum in favor of constitutional amendments and trusts all parties will listen to that voice. How the conclusion will be reached is another matter. Regardless of the constitution's final form, it depends on the discussions, but he believes respect for the people's voice is certain.

When asked again whether accusations regarding the 'Blue Regime' would not be an issue, Mr. Sophon said it should not be seen as an attack but simply opinions expressed, which sometimes cause friction—this is normal in a democracy. The color debate has been ongoing for a long time, but we have moved beyond it. Colors are not obstacles if we are not fixated on them. We have moved beyond these issues for the benefit of the people.
