The Minister of Public Health has ordered proactive drug screening in communities to combat the spread of drug abuse affecting family institutions, following a distressing case of a 15-year-old boy who, under the influence of methamphetamine, violently assaulted his own mother.
On 2 June 2026, Mr. Patthana Prompat, Minister of Public Health, spoke about measures for proactive drug testing in communities after a shocking case in Chaiyaphum province. A 15-year-old boy with a chronic drug addiction experienced hallucinations and committed sexual assault against his biological mother. The minister confirmed that the Health Ministry is not complacent and has coordinated proactively with local administrative authorities and police to conduct widespread screening in high-risk areas continuously. Communities finding any new leads can immediately inform officials for prompt investigation.
Regarding questions about whether the current drug addiction and psychiatric patient monitoring system is insufficient to address the severity of recent incidents, Mr. Patthana explained that government agencies are working proactively to their full capacity. However, since drug users are dispersed throughout communities, it is necessary to rely on local residents to help monitor. If community members notice individuals exhibiting risky behaviors such as glassy or unfocused eyes or incoherent speech—clear signs of drug-induced hallucinations—they should promptly report to local authorities, police, or health officials so interventions can prevent serious incidents.
Concerning psychological care for the victim, who is the mother, and others in the community, Mr. Patthana stated that he has urgently instructed multidisciplinary teams in collaboration with the Department of Mental Health to work alongside village health volunteers (VHVs) to provide close psychological rehabilitation and support to those affected and to community members who remain in shock.
Regarding updates on the 15-year-old boy involved, Mr. Patthana said that detailed reports on his behavior during treatment are awaited. However, this case has prompted the ministry to seriously reconsider legal and public health measures. While the approach that drug users are patients remains necessary, if individuals repeatedly relapse and cause ongoing concern and danger to society, stricter and more decisive measures may need to be implemented. The goal is to ensure effective treatment that prevents relapse and protects the community.
