Prasert Welcomes Thaksins Pardon, Confident He Wont Interfere in Pheu Thai Party Affairs, Open to Seeking Advice

Prasert welcomes Thaksin's pardon, confident he will not interfere with the Pheu Thai Party's work, noting the party already has an executive committee driving its operations. He reveals he may seek advice from him if the opportunity arises.

At 06:55 on 3 June 2026 at Sanam Luang, Mr. Prasert Chanruangthong, Minister of Education and Secretary-General of the Pheu Thai Party, commented on former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra receiving a royal pardon. He said it was a matter for celebration, with all party members and leaders feeling glad about Thaksin's royal mercy leading to his release. He personally has not yet called to congratulate him.

When asked if Thaksin would provide advice to the Pheu Thai Party now that he is free, Prasert said Thaksin is already closely connected to the party as its spiritual leader. Therefore, it would not be unusual for party members to meet with him; this is normal. When pressed whether Thaksin would offer guidance to the party, Prasert said he believes Thaksin would not interfere directly since the party has its own structure and an executive committee actively managing its affairs.

Asked whether, as party secretary, he might seek advice or consult with Thaksin, Prasert said Thaksin has experience, knowledge, and was a former national leader. Receiving advice from him is natural, and if the chance arises, he would gladly consult Thaksin on certain matters.

When asked if he had spoken with Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra, head of the Pheu Thai family, following Thaksin's pardon, Prasert said there had been no detailed discussions on the matter yet. However, once everyone learned the news, they were happy, and the party is pleased that Thaksin received the royal pardon and was released.
