Yoschanan Confident No Issues Among Coalition Partners After Bhumjaithai Withdraws Support for Pheu Thais Constitutional Amendment Draft

Yoschanan is confident there are no problems among coalition parties and no need to clear things with Anutin after Bhumjaithai decided to withdraw its support for Pheu Thai's constitutional amendment draft. He said this is a parliamentary mechanism and does not involve the Cabinet.

Mr. Yoschanan Wongsawat, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, and party-list Member of Parliament (MP) from the Pheu Thai Party (PT). He gave an interview at the Government House regarding Bhumjaithai Party's withdrawal of support from Pheu Thai's constitutional amendment draft, saying he was aware of the matter and that they must listen to all sides. This follows the statement by Ms. Nan Boonthida Somchai, Deputy Minister of Digital Economy and Society and spokesperson for Bhumjaithai, on 3 June. He added that today Pheu Thai will discuss how to proceed. He said that at Parliament, Mr. Julaphan Amornwiwat, Minister of Labour and Pheu Thai party leader, would clarify the matter after internal discussions.

When asked if being in the same government but not supporting each other could be politically interpreted, Yoschanan said there is nothing to it, as this concerns constitutional matters, which are individual rights. When further asked if this would cause friction within the coalition, Yoschanan stated there is no problem. . Regarding whether there needs to be a clearance with Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior and leader of Bhumjaithai Party, Yoschanan replied there is no problem because this concerns parliamentary mechanisms, not Cabinet mechanisms.

On whether Pheu Thai can still propose the constitutional amendment draft and if they have enough votes after Bhumjaithai's withdrawal, Yoschanan said they are currently evaluating. Parliament is discussing the issue, and once clear, the Pheu Thai leader will make a statement. He emphasized separating government issues from party issues. When pressed on whether this would cause problems in seeking cooperation within the government on other matters, Yoschanan said there is no problem, as this is a very specific issue.
