Government Spokesperson Accepts Error in Reporting on Sa Kaeo Checkpoint Opening, Warns of Legal Action

The government spokesperson revealed that the person spreading news about the Sa Kaeo checkpoint opening has admitted to providing inaccurate information. The government stressed that border matters are sensitive and requested responsible news reporting. If misinformation causes misunderstanding, legal proceedings will follow.

On 4 June 2026 GMT+7, Ms. Ratchada Thanadirek, spokesperson of the Prime Minister's Office, stated that regarding reports on social media claiming the permanent border crossing at Ban Klong Luek, Aranyaprathet District, Sa Kaeo Province, had been opened to allow Cambodian students to study in Thai schools, the original page spreading this news has since issued an apology. They acknowledged that the information presented was inaccurate, did not reflect the facts, and could cause public misunderstanding.

However, the government had previously clearly stated that the checkpoint was not opened as claimed. The governor of Sa Kaeo Province ordered the deputy governor and security agencies to take media representatives to the Klong Luek checkpoint area to observe the facts directly. Legal authorities have been authorized to file complaints against the false information spreaders under the Computer Crime Act. Despite clarifications, inaccurate information about border management has continued to circulate.

The spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office said border issues are sensitive, affecting both public sentiment and confidence in the area. Those operating news pages or disseminating public information must verify facts with relevant agencies before publication. It is inappropriate to spread incomplete information that could mislead society, as this creates obstacles to managing the situation locally and to the bilateral approach between Thailand and Cambodia.

The government respects freedom of news reporting and expression. However, if false or inaccurate information affects security, causes panic, or misleads the public about border situations, relevant agencies must take legal action to prevent repeated harm.

Therefore, the government urges the public to exercise discernment when receiving news, especially regarding border and security matters. If suspicious information is found, it should be verified before being shared.

Regarding Thai-Cambodian relations, the government's stance, as recently stated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is that Thailand is ready to act and protect national interests fully, based on principles of sovereignty, peace, international law, and factual accuracy.

The government confirms that border situation management will be conducted cautiously and will not allow false news to cause confusion in society.
