Itim Insists on Pushing Peoples Partys Constitution Draft to Pass First Reading

“Itim” urged “Bhumjaithai” to clarify the criteria for withdrawing support from the Pheu Thai Party’s constitution draft, revealing awareness of the Blue Regime constitution’s pressure tactics that monopolize the rules. He reaffirmed the commitment to push the People's Party's constitution draft to pass its first reading.

On 5 Jun 2026 GMT+7 at the parliament, Mr. Parit Wacharasindhu, party-list MP of the People's Party, spoke about the case of MPs from Bhumjaithai and Kla Tham parties withdrawing their support from the Pheu Thai Party's constitutional amendment draft, questioning if it signals anything. He said any signal should be asked from the parties involved. The fact is that during the constitutional amendment vote at the end of 2025, the People's Party allowed the public to select the constitution drafters based on principles similar to Pheu Thai’s approach, which combined public and parliamentary selection. At that time, MPs and senators approved the People's Party’s draft, while Pheu Thai’s draft did not secure enough senatorial votes. However, Bhumjaithai MPs supported the principle. If the Constitutional Court’s ruling is cited to avoid co-signing Pheu Thai’s draft or voting for the People's Party’s or Pheu Thai’s drafts, the question remains: what criteria are they using?

Aware of the pressure tactics to monopolize the rules.

When asked if the situation reflects forcing the constitutional amendment to have only one pathway, Mr. Parit said he hoped that would not happen. He had previously noted that the Blue Regime’s constitutional amendment has two goals: one is to disrupt the drafting process of a new constitution so society remains under the 2017 constitution, which allows widespread collusion; the other is to allow the new constitution drafting process to proceed but under conditions that monopolize the rules, controlling how drafters are selected or how content is decided. He hopes the signals sent are not attempts to ensure only Bhumjaithai’s draft passes the first reading.

Main goal: push the People's Party's draft to pass.

When asked whether having only one pathway for constitutional amendment would be legitimate, Mr. Parit said the fight must proceed step by step. In the first reading, all drafts should be considered, and differing views discussed in committee, even if in the minority. If the public sees their proposals address the country’s needs and responds positively, it will create momentum to persuade the parliamentary committee. When asked if he would accept no avenue for public consultation in the amendment process, he said they have their principles. Currently, the immediate key goal is to get the People's Party’s draft passed in the first reading and have its principles upheld by the majority committee to be formed.
