Good news for Pride Month: Transgender hormone treatment is now available under the Gold Card health benefits, with services beginning this June.
On 7 June 2026, Ms. Ploytale Lakshmisaengchan, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, announced that the government is advancing comprehensive health care for all groups and preparing to introduce new benefits. “Hormones for gender affirmation” This aims to reduce financial burdens for transgender individuals and encourage their safe participation in the health system, covering hormone medications, lab tests, and holistic transgender health care. Distribution to 50 service units is expected to begin no later than 10 June 2026.
Ms. Ploytale stated that currently, transgender services have been included in the benefits under the National Health Security Act (Gold Card), and the National Health Security Office (NHSO) has procured hormone medications. The "hormones for gender affirmation" include eight items divided into four main groups: 1. Feminizing hormones, both oral and topical; 2. Masculinizing hormones, injectable; 3. Male hormone blockers, oral; and 4. Central hormone suppressants, injectable. Beyond hormone treatment, benefits also cover health check-ups, mental health counseling, and laboratory tests such as general health, hormone levels, liver and kidney function, and metabolism.
Ms. Ploytale added that all service units—including private clinics within civil society, Bangkok's public health centers, and some government hospitals—should follow NHSO and relevant government agencies' announcements. However, hormone treatments can have physical and psychological side effects that may cause future health issues. Therefore, individuals must receive comprehensive counseling and ongoing care from specialists before starting hormone therapy.
