Social Security Confirms No Shortage of HIV Antiviral Drugs, Likely Due to Management Issues in Some Hospitals

The government revealed that the Social Security Office has confirmed there is no shortage of HIV antiviral drugs after insured persons reported receiving incomplete medication and having to make up to seven visits to hospitals. The issue is suspected to be related to drug distribution management at certain hospitals.

9 June 2026 GMT+7 Ms. Ploytale Laksamee Sangchan, Deputy Spokesperson for the Office of the Prime Minister, stated that following reports from insured persons on social media disclosing that they were HIV positive, and that recently, when collecting antiviral drugs at a private hospital under Social Security entitlement, they did not receive the full prescribed medication and had to make up to seven trips back and forth to the hospital,

the Social Security Office (SSO) has promptly investigated the issue in detail. They found that previously there were no problems, and drug delivery proceeded as normal. For any insured persons experiencing issues with HIV antiviral drugs, they can contact the Medical Services System Division, Pharmacy Section, at 02-956-2500, which will arrange to procure HIV antiviral drugs for affected insured persons. Furthermore, the investigation confirmed that HIV antiviral drugs are not in shortage but that distribution management problems may exist at certain hospitals only, with most hospitals still able to dispense HIV antiviral drugs as usual.

“The government supports campaigns to curb the spread of AIDS, with no stigma or discrimination against people living with HIV. It understands those affected and has continuously worked, alongside all governments and sectors, to reduce infection numbers while ensuring patients receive uninterrupted HIV antiviral treatment. The government provides the National Health Security Fund, or 30 Baht Universal Coverage Scheme, which includes benefits for HIV and AIDS patient care to ensure equal access to treatment and services.”
