Football Fans Brace for Disappointment as Sports Minister Hints at No Progress on World Cup Broadcast Rights Private Sector Remains Silent

The Minister of Tourism and Sports revealed that there has been no progress in the deal for World Cup broadcast rights, with no private companies contacting the ministry. It is expected that the high prices make the investment unprofitable.

On 10 June 2026, Mr. Surasak Pancharoenworakul, Minister of Tourism and Sports, spoke after the Cabinet meeting about the progress in purchasing the World Cup broadcast rights, admitting that the issue has not yet been brought up for discussion in the meeting.

Regarding reports that private companies have shown interest in acquiring the broadcast rights, the Minister of Tourism stated that so far no private company has contacted the ministry for consultation or coordination. However, the government does not oppose and welcomes private sector investment, viewing it as a business opportunity and a source of income for the private sector itself.

As for progress in negotiations with the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), Mr. Surasak said he is not aware of specific details since the talks are ongoing. He believes the main obstacle currently is likely the high cost and the lack of investment value.
