Vichai Reveals Parliament Police Urine Tests Show No Drug Use MPs Have No Authority to Order Tests

Vichai revealed that urine tests of parliament police showed no evidence of drug use. He emphasized the policy of conducting repeated tests twice a year, including for parliamentary officials. Meanwhile, MPs do not have the authority to order such tests. He also criticized those who criticized Sophon regarding the directive to respect the national flag morning and evening, saying they only have a head for decoration.

At 10:00 a.m. on 12 June 2026 at the Parliament, Police Major General Vichai Sangprapai, advisor to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, announced the results of drug tests on parliament police conducted on 22 May. The medical tests found no police officer at the Parliament with any drugs in their system. The Speaker has a policy prioritizing physical fitness checks for parliamentary personnel. Drug tests will be conducted regularly, possibly twice a year, including other parliamentary staff. MPs, however, have no authority to conduct such tests. The purpose of drug testing is to identify causes and provide treatment, not to arrest.

Police Major General Vichai addressed criticism from MPs accusing the Speaker of performing duties outside his role and focusing only on Buriram province. He explained that the drug problem project led by Mr. Sophon was initiated before assuming the Speaker position, and visits to Buriram are for monitoring work. The Speaker’s duties are similar to those of MPs, requiring fieldwork to solve people’s problems. Therefore, efforts will not be limited to Buriram but will extend to many areas. Regarding criticism of the Speaker’s policy to observe the national flag at 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., he asked what was wrong with this. It is a sign of respect, as the flag symbolizes Thailand’s sovereignty and honors ancestors’ sacrifices. This is proper conduct. He viewed critics as lacking thoughtfulness, metaphorically saying they have a head only to hold ears.
