Bangkok Orders Prawet District to Tighten Controls for Governor and Bangkok Council Elections, Addressing Missing Ballot Issues

The Deputy Permanent Secretary of Bangkok visited the area to urge the Prawet District Office to prepare for the 28 June election battle, emphasizing transparency amid concerns about mistakes impacting vote count totals.

On 13 June 2026, Mr. Thanit Tanbuaklee, Deputy Permanent Secretary of Bangkok, traveled to monitor election preparation and registry security at the 7th-floor meeting room of the Prawet District Office. This was in preparation for the upcoming Bangkok Metropolitan Council (BMC) member and Governor elections scheduled for 28 June. The meeting was attended by Bangkok Metropolitan Administration executives, Prawet District Office staff, administrative and registration officials, and related agencies, all providing coordinated reports.

During the meeting, the Deputy Permanent Secretary reiterated the directives of the Permanent Secretary of Bangkok, acting as the local election director for Bangkok. He instructed officials and personnel to perform their duties with strict political neutrality and to prepare thoroughly for managing voter registration and voter lists to ensure the election proceeds smoothly, transparently, and with maximum efficiency.

Additionally, participants exchanged views on challenges, obstacles, and operational guidelines, applying lessons learned from previous elections. For general registration, civil registration, and cases involving foreigners, officials were instructed to verify information carefully and in strict compliance with the law.

"A critical issue for this election is that the number of eligible voters for the Bangkok Council and Governor in many areas differs, with more voters eligible for Governor. This discrepancy may become a weak point in the ballot distribution process. Therefore, I have ordered polling station staff to exercise double caution to prevent ballot distribution errors that could affect vote counting," the Deputy Permanent Secretary of Bangkok stated.

Moreover, to address weather conditions during the rainy season, the Prawet District Office has revised plans to relocate all polling stations previously set up in tents to inside buildings, facilitating voter convenience and preventing problems in case of heavy rain on election day. Officials were also instructed to accelerate public communications about polling location changes in advance and to install large signage at former polling sites to indicate new locations, preventing voter confusion on voting day.
