Anutin Declares Thailand Fully Prepared with Tight Border Surveillance Calls Spotting a Monitor Lizard Good Luck

Prime Minister Anutin revealed after the National Security Council meeting that Thailand is fully prepared and closely monitoring the border situation. He said it was good luck after spotting a monitor lizard while walking back to the Thai Khu Fah building.

At 14:20 on 15 June 2026 GMT+7, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul presided over the National Security Council (NSC) meeting, with Deputy Prime Ministers Pakorn Nilprapunt and Sihasak Phuangketkaew, Minister of Justice Police General Rutthapon Naowarat, Minister of Digital Economy and Society Chaichon Chidchob, NSC Secretary-General Chatchai Bangchuad, and military commanders attending.

At 16:10, Prime Minister Anutin briefed after the meeting that several issues were agreed upon, including mechanisms under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and matters concerning drones. When asked if there were reports of Cambodian tanks near the border and what the facts were, Anutin said there were none.

When further asked about a second batch of tanks delivered by China to Cambodia, Anutin stated, that whatever Cambodia does on its own soil is their right. Thailand has no right to interfere. We are fully monitoring our border and fully prepared to prevent any infringement of our sovereignty. He emphasized confidence that within Cambodia’s territory, we have no right to know or intervene. We are prepared to defend our land and assure that no one can encroach or invade our territory. When asked if Cambodia is exploiting the period of Thai national mourning, Anutin retorted, “How do you know that?”

Reporters noted that after the NSC meeting, Prime Minister Anutin walked back to the Thai Khu Fah building and encountered a monitor lizard near a canal in the Government House compound before the lizard jumped into the water, and the prime minister immediately said, “Oh, good luck today.” When reporters asked if he considered it good luck, the prime minister replied, “Of course it’s good luck. When you see these creatures, it’s said to be lucky.”
