Suriyasak, Minister of Agriculture, revealed a postponement of his trip to Malaysia to discuss lifting the ban on Thai shrimp imports due to the Malaysian Agriculture Minister's busy schedule. He plans to propose a trade deal involving barramundi imports, while Deputy Prime Minister Supachai is handling the search for new markets.
At 09:45 on 16 June 2026 at the Government House, Suriyasak Jungrungkit, Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, spoke about the progress of his planned negotiations with Malaysia's Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives to lift the suspension on importing five species of Thai shrimp. Originally scheduled for 17 June, the meeting was postponed because the Malaysian minister had overseas commitments. The meeting will be rescheduled when convenient.
When asked about the details of the negotiations with Malaysia, Suriyasak said the focus will be on obtaining permission to import Thai shrimp while allowing imports of barramundi from Malaysia. The discussions will cover setting quality standards for shrimp and barramundi to meet agreed criteria, as well as improving and speeding up approval procedures. The search for new markets is the responsibility of the Ministry of Commerce, currently overseen by Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Supachai Suthampan.
Regarding how affected operators can proceed in the meantime, Suriyasak said this matter will be managed by Supachai.
