Sabida Shares Moment of Breast Cancer Diagnosis: Surgery Over Weekend, Back to Work Monday

Offering support to all women facing serious illness, Sabida recounted the moment she discovered malignant tissue diagnosed as breast cancer during her appointment as Deputy Minister of Interior. She requested 2-3 days leave from Anutin, underwent surgery over the weekend, and returned to work on Monday.

On 16 June 2026 GMT+7, Ms. Sabida Thaiset, Minister of Culture, participated in the event "Voice for Her Power: The Power of Hope to Overcome Breast Cancer," delivering a keynote speech titled "Because Women Are the Heart of Society: It Is Time Not to Neglect Breast Health." The event focused on raising awareness about breast health care and the importance of regular screening under the theme "Targeting Better Breast Cancer Treatment."

At one point, Ms. Sabida said it was an honor to join the event to encourage all women facing unexpected serious illness. She stressed the significance of the topic as it reflects the value, role, and power of women — whether that power is extended to family, community, organizations, or society at large.

. . . Ms. Sabida then shared her personal experience as a breast cancer patient, stating that when she first assumed the position of Deputy Minister of Interior in 2024, she was diagnosed with cancer. At that time, she noticed only minor abnormalities and consulted with her husband, but they did not immediately consider screening. Her husband then informed her elder and younger sisters, and her sister arranged a medical appointment. During the initial mammogram, doctors found nothing alarming and said there was no cause for concern.

Subsequently, an ultrasound also showed no abnormalities. The doctor said there was nothing worrisome and no unusual signs upon physical examination. She thought nothing was wrong, but the doctor insisted that some abnormality must exist and recommended an MRI, which is nearly the final diagnostic step. If no problem was found there, she could rest easy. However, after the MRI, the doctor called with concern, suggesting an abnormality and requesting a biopsy. She was unprepared physically and emotionally for this, especially with important commitments in 2-3 days.

“The biopsy revealed malignant tissue. I urgently scheduled surgery but postponed the appointment twice because of my upcoming ministerial duties and policy announcement. It was impossible for me to be hospitalized then. I asked the doctor for a little more time until finally the doctor insisted on surgery. The operation was scheduled over the weekend right after I took office and completed my policy speech. That night, I was admitted to the hospital to prepare for surgery.”

Ms. Sabida continued that period was very tough for her. As a woman, she faced societal doubts about her legitimacy. She felt compelled to prove herself through intense work. However, the illness posed challenges and she worried it might hinder her performance. She had surgery over the weekend and returned to work Monday. At that time, Anutin Charnvirakul, now Prime Minister, was Minister of Interior.

Before surgery, she told Anutin, “Sir, I would like to request 2-3 days off.” He asked where she was going, and upon learning it was for surgery, he was shocked but supportive. He encouraged her and wished for a successful treatment so she could quickly resume work for the country. The surgery went well.
