Government Opens Applications for Thai Representative to Compete for WHO Director-General Position

“Lalida” revealed that the government is accepting applications from Thai nationals aged at least 45 to compete for the position of Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2027, aiming to advance Thailand's role as a global leader in public health and set the international health agenda.

On 20 June 2026, Ms. Lalida Pertwivatana, Deputy Spokesperson of the Office of the Prime Minister, stated that Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul places great importance on elevating Thailand's role on the international stage, especially in public health, a key national strength. Recently, the Ministry of Public Health opened applications for qualified individuals to represent Thailand in the election for the WHO Director-General position, which will become vacant in 2027.

The Deputy Spokesperson said the Cabinet approved on 28 April 2026 Thailand's nomination of a representative for the WHO Director-General election and assigned the Ministry of Public Health to conduct the selection process. A selection committee was appointed, consisting of experts from diverse fields including public health, foreign affairs, and international organizations, to ensure a transparent and effective selection.

Mr. Pattana Promphat, Minister of Public Health, stated that the WHO Director-General position is among the most significant global public health leadership roles. It shapes global health policy, responds to emerging diseases, promotes health security, and drives international public health cooperation.

Applicants must be Thai nationals aged at least 45 by the application deadline and meet WHO criteria, including proven achievements and experience in health and public health, extensive international public health experience, leadership qualities, and commitment to WHO's mission. Applications are open now until 17 July 2026 at the Ministry of Public Health. Candidates will present their vision to the selection committee on 23 July 2026, after which qualified names will be submitted to the Cabinet for approval as Thailand's representative.

The Deputy Spokesperson said Thailand’s participation in this global leadership election reflects the strength and capability of the Thai health system, recognized internationally. It also offers a critical opportunity to expand Thailand’s role in shaping and advancing the international public health agenda.

“If Thailand’s representative is elected as WHO Director-General, it will mark a significant step in raising Thailand’s global profile, build confidence in its health system, increase opportunities for international cooperation, and provide Thai health personnel with greater chances to develop their capabilities and contribute to shaping global health policies,” Ms. Lalida said.

The government is fully committed to supporting the selection process and promoting Thailand’s candidate to create opportunities for the country to lead on key global public health issues and enhance its reputation as an international health and public health leader.
