Abhisit Criticizes Budget Transfer Bill as Contradictory Amid Economic Crisis, Condemns 400 Billion Baht Loan Increasing National Debt Burden

Abhisit, leader of the Democrat Party, points out that the Budget Transfer Bill is contradictory and runs counter to the economic crisis, criticizing the government for borrowing 400 billion baht, which increases the national public debt burden nearing its ceiling.

On 20 June 2026, Abhisit Vejjajiva, party-list MP and leader of the Democrat Party, commented on the consideration of the Budget Transfer Bill scheduled for debate in the House of Representatives later this month. He said the Democrat Party is preparing to review the bill, but a key issue is that the opposition has not yet received details of the draft law. They only know that the bill will be submitted to the Cabinet on Tuesday, 23 June, before being considered by the House on Thursday, 25 June. While understanding the urgency, the initial question is why the government delayed action and why the budget transfer amount is so small. Previously, during the crisis, the government cited the need to borrow an additional 400 billion baht to manage the budget and various projects, but this time the process seems routine despite ongoing reports of problems in many state projects.

Abhisit added that the opposition had earlier estimated that if the government could transfer about 100 billion baht in budget, additional borrowing might not be necessary. However, recent information indicates the transfer will be only 10 billion baht. They continue to monitor the overall economy to assess the appropriateness of budget allocations, but so far have not seen detailed allocations by ministry or project. Once that information is available, it will be scrutinized closely. The approach to debating this bill requires examination of its details. Several Democrat MPs are expected to participate in the debate, especially on the issue of the country's public debt status. Currently, the government is pushing the national debt closer to its statutory ceiling. Therefore, every baht of the budget deficit must be used with maximum efficiency.
