Police Commission Chair Says Former Pop Party MP Candidate’s Money Laundering and Drug-Related Case Is Not Yet Closed

Vatcharapong, Chair of the Police Commission, pointed out that the money laundering and drug-related case involving a former Pop Party MP candidate is still ongoing despite the prosecutor's decision not to file charges. He believes the police are preparing a dissenting opinion to submit to the Attorney General for a final decision.

On 21 June, Mr. Vatcharapong Kuwijitsuwan, Chair of the Police Commission of the House of Representatives, spoke about the case involving Ms. Sirikanya Tansakul, a party-list MP and Deputy Leader of the Pop Party, and Mr. Pichon Chaowaphatwanwong, the party secretary. They revealed that prosecutors had decided not to press charges against Mr. Boonrit Rarungroj, a former candidate for MP in Bangkok's District 33 for the Pop Party, in a money laundering case linked to a drug network. This decision led to his disqualification as a candidate. They also called for fairness for Mr. Pawut Pongwitthayaphanu, a party-list MP of the Pop Party, who is under investigation for possible involvement in a Forex money laundering case, suggesting he may be innocent. Vatcharapong said that, according to information tracked, the case against the former MP candidate originated from an expansion of an investigation by Narcotics Suppression Division 2 in December 2025. This came from 10 major drug cases, which revealed financial links to 11 suspects. Evidence was collected, arrest warrants approved by the Criminal Court, followed by searches, arrests, and asset seizures. Subsequently, the investigators from Narcotics Suppression Division 2 decided to charge all 11 suspects with conspiracy to launder money and submitted the case to the prosecutors in March 2026.

Vatcharapong added that although the prosecutors issued a decision not to prosecute and returned the case file to the Royal Thai Police for action under Criminal Procedure Code Section 145/1, the case is not yet closed. The Royal Thai Police have already received the case back and are expected to prepare a dissenting opinion against the non-prosecution order to submit to the Attorney General for a final ruling according to legal procedures.
