Sophon Launches Parliament Forum to Meet Citizens, Praises Princess Bajrakitiyabha as a Model of Equality

Sophon launched the Parliament Meets the People forum, honoring Princess Bajrakitiyabha as a model of equality who cares deeply about the well-being and dignity of inmates.

On 22 June 2026, Sophon Sarum, President of the Parliament and Speaker of the House of Representatives, presided over the opening of the first 'Parliament Meets the People' forum under the theme 'Gender Equality' at the Parliament Building. Mallika Jirapanwanich, First Deputy Speaker of the House, along with executives, parliamentary staff, and students participated. Before the ceremony began, attendees stood in silence to pay respects to Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendira Debyavati, Krom Luang Rajsarinisiri Patchra Maha Vajraratchathida.

Sophon opened the event and delivered a keynote titled 'The House of Representatives and Public Participation,' stating that Parliament is a core democratic institution and a vital venue for hearing problems and hardships from all sectors of society. Although Thai society often emphasizes the executive branch for driving the country, the true value of democracy lies in Parliament, which offers citizens the opportunity to participate in shaping the nation's direction and serves as a key platform for legislative-driven change.

The Parliament President added that equality extends beyond gender differences; it means respecting the human dignity of everyone equally, regardless of social status, position, or wealth. "Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendira Debyavati, Krom Luang Rajsarinisiri Patchra Maha Vajraratchathida, is an example of promoting equality. She graduated in law, became a prosecutor, and sat as a judge. She personally visited prisons to observe the welfare and conditions of inmates, ensuring their human dignity despite their offenses. She is another excellent example of true equality," he said.

Sophon also offered advice to youth, noting that the new generation is crucial for driving the country forward. They should learn and adapt to global changes while preserving the nation's historical and cultural roots. He encouraged them to creatively utilize technology and artificial intelligence (AI) to develop their potential and contribute to the country's future. Furthermore, national development must begin with building people—nurturing talented and virtuous individuals to reach their full potential while not neglecting those in vulnerable situations, ensuring everyone can live peacefully and equally in society.
