The Minister of Labour urgently ordered assistance for the family of Wisanu Lasher following his sudden death from shock at a worker camp in Busan, affirming their right to compensation from the overseas employment fund.
On 22 June 2026, Julpan Amornwiwat, Minister of Labour, revealed the distressing news concerning a Thai worker abroad. Initial reports from the Labour Attaché Office at the Royal Thai Embassy in Seoul, South Korea, stated that Wisanu Lasher, a 32-year-old Thai worker from Chiang Rai province, had suddenly passed away.
Wisanu had legally traveled to work as a general industrial worker in the Busan area in southern South Korea under an E9 visa since 9 January 2024. On the morning of 21 June 2026, coworkers found Wisanu’s body lying as if asleep, unresponsive, in a mysterious circumstance.
Regarding follow-up actions and coordination, Julpan said that the Labour Attaché Office in Seoul is currently working closely with consular staff, awaiting the official autopsy report from South Korean police to proceed with issuing the death certificate. Meanwhile, the deceased’s younger sister contacted consular officials to inquire about the process for repatriating her brother’s body to Thailand for funeral rites. The consular staff have provided guidance, detailed explanations, and necessary procedures to the family.
On benefits and compensation for the family, the Minister of Labour stated that South Korean law is being checked by the Seoul Labour Attaché Office in coordination with relevant Korean authorities to determine the entitlements due to the deceased. On the Thai side, it was confirmed that Wisanu was a registered member of the Overseas Employment Assistance Fund. Therefore, his relatives can prepare the required documents and apply to the Department of Employment immediately. Approval of compensation will follow the regulations of the committee overseeing the fund.
"The Ministry of Labour expresses its deepest condolences to the family of Wisanu Lasher. Moving forward, the ministry will closely monitor the situation and progress to provide full assistance to the deceased’s family in every aspect," Julpan concluded.
