Progress in the barcode election ballot case remains stalled as the Constitutional Court continues to await expert witness opinions to aid in its deliberation.
On 24 Jun 2026 GMT+7, the Constitutional Court justices considered a petition from the Ombudsman requesting a constitutional interpretation under Article 213. The petition concerns the Election Commission and related bodies conducting the general election for members of the House of Representatives on 8 Feb 2026, during which ballots featuring printed barcodes and QR codes were used. It is believed these codes could allow tracing and verifying voters' identities and their votes, thus compromising ballot secrecy. This allegedly contravenes Articles 4, 25, 72, 34, 50(7), 43 paragraph two, 85, 95, and 224 of the Constitution.
After discussion, the Constitutional Court resolved to await expert witness opinions and testimony. To facilitate thorough consideration, the Constitutional Court Office was assigned to further study the matter and provide additional information to the Court.
