The Industry Committee supports the Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI) in establishing a new Thai Industrial Standard (TIS) for steel to address the problems with IF-type rebar by requiring all factories to have a steel refining furnace in every stage of rebar production.
At 15:30 on 24 June 2026 at the Parliament, Mr. Supachok Srisukjon, Member of Parliament for Nakhon Pathom from the Bhumjaithai Party and Chairman of the Industry Committee of the Parliament, announced after a committee meeting reviewing the draft revision of the new Thai Industrial Standard (TIS) for steel. The committee summoned relevant agencies such as the Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI), Department of Industrial Works, the Steel Industry Group of the Federation of Thai Industries Group 10, and associations of IF, EF, and BO steel producers to provide information. On 23 June, the TISI board resolved to revise the draft TIS for steel mainly to address current issues with IF-type rebar and to advance new production technologies by requiring all factories to have a steel refining furnace in every stage of rebar production, whether IF, EF, or BO steel. Round steel produced from IF furnaces may be used for road construction but must undergo refining. However, rebar used in large building structures must be produced using EF or BO refining furnaces only; steel from IF furnaces is strictly prohibited.
All factories must have a steel refining furnace.
Mr. Supachok added that the new draft TIS for steel must undergo a 30-day public consultation period. During this time, proposals from the public or steel associations will be submitted again to TISI for review to establish a standard acceptable to all. While awaiting the inclusion of the new draft TIS into the Ministry of Industry's regulations, relevant agencies have planned a three-level quality inspection system: from initial production processes, monthly quality tests at distribution points midstream, to random checks at retail outlets downstream, to ensure the public’s trust in the steel meeting TIS standards.
Investigation into the reopening of SKY is pending.
Mr. Krit Silpachai, MP for Rayong from the Prachachon Party and Deputy Chairman of the Industry Committee, addressed concerns about the reopening of Sin Ke Yuan Steel Company Limited (SKY). He said that the TISI has clear measures to protect public safety in construction. However, the committee will scrutinize the entire process from the company's closure order, any corrective orders, to the reopening of IF steel production to verify its legitimacy. They are currently awaiting documents from relevant agencies. Similarly, Mr. Supachok stated that the SKY case will not be overlooked and will be reviewed again to identify any issues or concerns.
