Sihasak urged Thai people not to be swayed by Hun Sen's visit to China, expressing confidence that China knows how to position itself. He emphasized that Thailand will continue to follow the UNCLOS framework, and if outcomes do not align with Thailand's interests or fairness, further talks will be necessary.
On 27 June 2026 at IMPACT Muang Thong Thani, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sihasak Puangketkaew was interviewed about Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen's visit to the People's Republic of China and whether it should cause concern. He said Cambodia's visit is routine, reflecting their own relationships. He noted that China is not siding with either party, advising people to carefully observe and not be unsettled by every news report, as some come from Cambodian sources.
“I believe China knows how to position itself regarding bilateral relations, which are normal between China and Cambodia. China also knows to avoid actions that would affect the conflict situation. Don't be overly concerned about the news, as it is released by Cambodia to support their own side.”
Regarding reports that Cambodia requested to purchase ammunition from China, Sihasak said this is part of prior agreements. China also has certain interests in Cambodia, unrelated to Thailand-Cambodia issues—such as the military base China has there—so China’s involvement is in that context. However, any actions must not impact the Thailand-Cambodia conflict or favor one side. He believes China understands this well and that they know the developments as they unfold.
When asked if the compulsory conciliation process under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) is proceeding as normal, Sihasak confirmed it is ongoing. He stated that the framework requires examining details and facts to determine the final outcome and approach to resolving maritime border issues between the two countries. If the results are acceptable, they may be accepted; if they do not align with Thailand's interests or fairness, further negotiations will be necessary.
