
Suriya, Minister of Agriculture, is preparing to fly to Malaysia on 1 July to discuss lifting the ban on five Thai shrimp species imports. He also noted that Thailand has suspended imports of barramundi from Malaysia. He believes this negotiation will benefit both sides.
At 09:05 on 29 June 2026 at the Parliament, Mr. Suriya Jungrungreangkit, Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, spoke about progress in talks with the Malaysian Minister of Agriculture and Food Security regarding Malaysia's suspension of five Thai shrimp species imports. He said that while Malaysia banned Thai shrimp imports, Thailand has likewise banned barramundi imports from Malaysia. The Malaysian minister has sent an official letter accepting the meeting scheduled for 1 July in Malaysia. He has instructed relevant agencies to prepare information for negotiations to reach a resolution. He is confident this discussion will benefit both sides, allowing Thailand to export shrimp to Malaysia and enabling Malaysian consumers to enjoy shrimp at lower prices.
