Cabinet Approves Iraq Opening Embassy in Thailand to Boost Trade and Energy Cooperation

On 30 June 2026, the Cabinet approved the opening of the Embassy of Iraq in Thailand, marking a key step to elevate trade, energy cooperation, and bilateral relations between the two countries.

30 June 2026 GMT+7 Ms. Ratchada Thanadirek, spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, revealed that the Cabinet had resolved to approve the Iraqi government's proposal to open the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in Thailand. As proposed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this represents a significant advancement in bilateral relations, following Iraq's continued interest in reopening its embassy in Thailand amid increasing domestic stability. This also marks the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Thailand and Iraq in 2026.

The Prime Minister's Office spokesperson added, that the establishment of the Iraqi embassy in Thailand will enhance coordination efficiency between the two nations and open opportunities to expand cooperation in many areas, especially energy, as Iraq ranks as the world's fourth largest oil producer. In trade and investment, Iraq is an important market for Thai rice exports, as well as in tourism, with a growing number of Iraqi tourists visiting Thailand—15,644 in 2025, more than triple the previous year. This move will also strengthen Thailand's strategic role in the Middle East region and improve its ability to effectively support Iraqi nationals in Thailand.
