The Cabinet has extended the deadline for resolving nationality and personal status issues by one year, until 30 June 2027, exclusively for individuals who have migrated to Thailand long-term and children born in Thailand. Existing criteria remain unchanged, and efforts will focus on serving the original target groups while strengthening anti-corruption enforcement.
On 30 June 2026, Ms. Ratchada Thanadirek, spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, announced that the Cabinet approved a proposal from the National Security Council to extend the implementation period under the criteria to expedite resolving nationality and personal status issues for long-term migrants residing in the Kingdom and children born in the Kingdom. The extension is for one time only, until 30 June 2027, extending from the original deadline of 30 June 2026 (as per the Cabinet resolution on 29 October 2024). The extension is due to very limited progress so far, mainly because the target groups have not fully reported themselves to submit status improvement applications. The criteria and qualifications remain entirely unchanged, for example:
1. For individuals who have migrated to reside in the Kingdom long-term (consideration for issuance of a certificate allowing residence in the Kingdom), general qualifications of applicants include, for example, (1) inability to return to their country of origin, and (2) absence of evidence of holding or using another nationality.
2. For children of ethnic minorities or ethnic groups born in Thailand (consideration for nationality), applicants must be children of persons previously surveyed and registered up to 1999, as well as those included in additional surveys conducted between 2005 and 2011.
Ms. Ratchada added that the Cabinet assigned the Department of Provincial Administration to establish guidelines for screening and managing outstanding cases, to promptly update registration databases to ensure accuracy and current status. Additionally, strict law enforcement will be applied to minimize security impacts and prevent exploitation by malicious actors and criminal networks.
