It was also revealed that the Prime Minister plans to visit Malaysia on 9-10 July, expected to request assistance in expediting sustainable peace.
At 10:00 a.m. on 1 July 2026 at the Government House, Wan Muhammad Nor Mata, political advisor to the Prime Minister and advisor to the government's special delegation, spoke about progress in the southern border peace talks. He said there is a subcommittee conducting internal discussions with about two meetings remaining. After that, a large committee meeting will be held in Malaysia in September. If the large committee reaches agreement, there may be a joint signing and a formal declaration issued, with the outlook likely positive.
When asked about the expected duration of the talks, Wan Muhammad Nor said it depends on the results of the large committee meeting in September, which is expected to show considerably more progress than before.
When asked if Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who is also Minister of Interior, plans to discuss the southern situation during his visit to Malaysia, Wan Muhammad Nor said the Prime Minister is scheduled to visit Malaysia on 9-10 July in his capacity as Prime Minister and ASEAN member. While the stability of the southern border provinces is an important issue that may be raised, it is not the main focus of this visit. However, it is expected that discussions will include a request for Malaysia to help accelerate sustainable peace.
Asked about the continued incidents in the southern region, Wan Muhammad Nor said all parties are analyzing the situation. While violent incidents remain frequent, the threat to life has decreased.
