Shrimp exporters are relieved as Suriya flew to discuss with Malaysia's Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, confident that Thai shrimp exports will return to normal within 30 days.
On 1 July 2026, Suriya Juangroongruangkit, Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, revealed that he traveled to attend a meeting with Dato' Seri Mohammad Sabu, Malaysia's Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, to discuss Malaysia's ban on Thai shrimp imports. Both parties agreed to collaborate in expediting the inspection process concerning residue and sanitary standards (SPS) to restore normal import-export operations. It is anticipated that, with this accelerated effort, the inspection process will take no more than 30 days.
Additionally, discussions included Thailand's plans to export meat and pork products to Malaysia. Malaysia pledged to expedite procedures to allow Thailand to export these products to Malaysia promptly.
"The reason Malaysia imposed the shrimp ban on Thailand is due to Malaysia implementing new measures to regulate the standards of agricultural imports and exports within the country, which have already been enacted. However, from this discussion, it is believed that Thailand will soon be able to resume shrimp exports to Malaysia as usual."
